The world people live on, taken as a whole. Also said of the earth as opposed to the sky.
سَافَرَ سَامِي حَوْلَ الْأَرْضِ.
Sami travelled around the earth.
The surface one walks, sits or lies on, outdoors or inside a house.
جَلَسَ الطَّالِبُ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ.
The student sat on the ground.
One particular region or country, the one somebody lives in or the one being talked about.
سَكَنَ رَامِي فِي أَرْضٍ بَعِيدَةٍ.
Rami lived in a faraway land.
A plot that somebody owns or farms. Also said of soil judged by its quality, good or poor.

The neighbour bought a piece of land near the river.

What the root means ء ر ض
The root is about what carries people: the earth they live on and the ground they walk on. From there comes the idea of whatever is low or underneath.
