Father
The man whose child one is, the one who begot or raised someone.
ذَهَبَ الْأَبُ مَعَ ابْنِهِ إِلَى السُّوقِ
The father went to the market with his son.
By extension, the grandfather or any man from whom one descends, however far back.
عَاشَ آبَاءُ سَامِي فِي هَذِهِ الْقَرْيَةِ
Sami's forefathers lived in this village.

What the root means ء ب و
The root names the father and the bond between him and his children. From it come "the two parents" and "fatherhood".
