Word family

What the root means ب ع د

The basic verb says that a person or a thing is far off, or goes far away: the opposite of being near. The headword describes what is in that state; distance, moving something away, moving away oneself and “farther” grow from the same idea.

to be far, to go far away

بَعُدَ

distance, remoteness

بُعْدٌ

to send far away, to remove

أَبْعَدَ

to keep apart, to put at a distance

بَاعَدَ

اِبْتَعَدَ

farther, farthest

أَبْعَدُ

Synonyms

far away, remote

نَاءٍ

More literary: it stresses being off on one’s own, cut off from others, whereas the headword simply states distance.

remote, far-off

قَصِيٌّ

Stronger and rarer: it is said of what lies at the very edge, at the end of the land or of the known world, and is hardly used for kinship or for the unlikely.
