Other than
Placed before a noun, it means whatever is not the person or thing named: “other than”, “someone else than”.
Before a describing word it gives its opposite: “not”, like the prefix “un-”.
Sets someone or something apart from what has just been said: “except”, “but”, “apart from”.
With “by” or “from” before it, it says that the thing named is absent: “without”.
What the root means غ ي ر
The root carries the idea of being other, different. To change a thing is to make it other than it was: hence “to change”, “to be altered” and “change”; jealousy and the jealous person belong to the same family.
