What the root means ح د ث
The basic verb means to be new, to begin to exist, to happen. The headword keeps both sides of the family, what is new and what is told; beside it stand “to happen”, “occurrence”, “newness”, “the event” and “the tale people talk of”.
to happen, to occur
حَدَثَ
occurrence, coming into being
حُدُوثٌ
newness; youth
حَدَاثَةٌ
new, occurring; event
حَادِثٌ
newly made, invented
مُحْدَثٌ
tale that people talk of
أُحْدُوثَةٌ
news, piece of information
خَبَرٌ
It stresses the information conveyed, true or false, rather than the act of speaking or telling.
speech, words
كَلَامٌ
It names speech in general, anything said, whereas the headword is speech addressed to someone to report or tell him something.
new, brand-new
جَدِيدٌ
It matches only the sense “new” and is said above all of what has not yet been used, whereas the headword says the thing is recent in time.
old, ancient (opposite of the sense “new”)
قَدِيمٌ
