To flow

Said of water and of any liquid moving along: a river, tears, blood. This is the first meaning of the word.

جَرَى الْمَاءُ فِي الْحَدِيقَةِ.

The water flowed in the garden.

To run

Said of a horse or another animal, and of a person, moving very fast on its legs.

جَرَى الْحِصَانُ فِي الْحَقْلِ.

The horse ran in the field.

To move along its course

Said of a ship running over the water, and of the sun or the stars travelling across the sky.

جَرَتِ السَّفِينَةُ فِي الْبَحْرِ.

The ship ran along on the sea.

To happen, to take place

Said of an event that occurs, or of what happens to someone.

جَرَى الْحَادِثُ أَمَامَ الْمَدْرَسَةِ.

The accident happened in front of the school.
