To earn, to gain

To obtain goods, money or an advantage through one's work or activity. Said of someone earning a living as well as of someone making a profit.

كَسَبَ التَّاجِرُ رِبْحًا قَلِيلًا الْيَوْمَ.

The merchant earned a small profit today.

To bring upon oneself by one's deeds

To do a deed, good or bad, and reap its consequences. Said of what a person draws upon themselves by their conduct: esteem, blame, reward or penalty.

كَسَبَ الطَّالِبُ احْتِرَامَ مُعَلِّمِهِ.

The student earned his teacher's respect.

To make someone gain (classical use)

To bring someone a gain or help them obtain it. This use belongs to the classical language; today the verb of the same family meaning “to make someone gain” is used for it.
