Said of what has been named beforehand and is therefore settled: a date, a term, a price, a sum that people have settled on.
دَفَعَ الْمُشْتَرِي ثَمَنًا مُسَمًّى لِلتَّاجِرِ.
The buyer paid the merchant a stated price.
Said of a person or a thing that bears a name, that has been given such and such a name.
فِي الْحَيِّ شَارِعٌ مُسَمًّى بِاسْمِ شَاعِرٍ.
In the neighbourhood there is a street named after a poet.
What the root means س م و
The root carries the idea of rising and being high; the name, that by which a thing is pointed out and brought into view, is attached to it too. From it come “to rise”, “height”, “to give a name” and “namesake”.
