The moon

The body that lights the night sky and is seen to change shape through the month.

ظَهَرَ الْقَمَرُ فَوْقَ الْبَيْتِ

The moon appeared above the house.

The moon after its first nights

In the older, stricter usage the word names the moon from its third night on, once it is no longer a thin crescent.

صَارَ الْهِلَالُ قَمَرًا بَعْدَ ثَلَاثِ لَيَالٍ

The crescent became a moon after three nights.

Satellite modern usage

Today the word also names any body that circles a planet, and in particular the man-made device sent into orbit around the Earth.

يَدُورُ الْقَمَرُ الصِّنَاعِيُّ حَوْلَ الْأَرْضِ

The artificial satellite orbits the Earth.
