To hope for, to expect
To look forward with confidence to something good that one thinks possible: a success, some help, a return.
رَجَا سَامِي النَّجَاحَ فِي الِامْتِحَانِ
Sami hoped to pass the exam.
In today's usage, to ask someone for something politely or earnestly.
رَجَتْ لَيْلَى جَارَهَا أَنْ يُسَاعِدَهَا
Layla asked her neighbour to kindly help her.
What the root means ر ج و
The root carries the idea of hope, the opposite of despair: looking forward to something good that one believes possible. From it come "hope", other verbs for "to hope" and "thing hoped for".
