Meaning and usage

One, a single

The first of the numbers: one person or thing and no more. It is said of anything that can be counted.

اِشْتَرَى سَامِي كِتَابًا وَاحِدًا

Sami bought just one book.

One and the same

Said of two or more things that amount to the same thing, with no difference between them.

رَأْيِي وَرَأْيُ سَلْمَى وَاحِدٌ

My opinion and Salma's are one and the same.

Unequalled (literary)

In elevated language, said of someone who has no match in his time or in his field: he is "the one" of his age.

هَذَا الطَّبِيبُ وَاحِدُ عَصْرِهِ

This doctor is without equal in his time.

What the root means و ح د

The root carries the idea of being one, and so alone and without a match. From it come the words for someone who is alone, for solitude, for what has no equal and for making things into one.
