Ally, protector

One who is close to someone, takes his side and supports him: a firm friend, an ally, a protector.

كَانَ الْجَارُ وَلِيًّا لِلْأُسْرَةِ.

The neighbour was an ally to the family.

Guardian, person in charge

One who has charge of another's affairs and decides for him, for example an orphan's guardian.

الْعَمُّ وَلِيُّ الطِّفْلِ الْيَتِيمِ.

The uncle is the orphan child's guardian.
