The sea, a vast stretch of salt water. A word of the elevated style.
نَظَرَ الطِّفْلُ إِلَى الْيَمِّ مِنَ الشَّاطِئِ.
The child looked at the sea from the shore.
Also said of a great river of fresh water, such as the Nile.
عَبَرَ الْمُسَافِرُ الْيَمَّ فِي قَارِبٍ.
The traveller crossed the great river in a boat.
What the root means ي م م
The dictionary reports that some held this word to be a loan from Syriac taken into Arabic; it gives it no root idea of its own. From it the dictionary draws only being thrown into the sea or covered by it.
