Each of two things that go together, alike or opposite, such as the two shoes of a pair. In everyday use it also names the pair itself.

وَضَعَ سَامِي زَوْجًا مِنَ الْجَوَارِبِ فِي الْحَقِيبَةِ.

Sami put a pair of socks in the bag.

The partner in a marriage. The classical language uses this one word for the husband and for the wife alike.
