To take a thing so as to have it as one's own, to acquire it or provide oneself with it.
اِتَّخَذَ رَامِي بَيْتًا قُرْبَ الْبَحْرِ.
Rami got himself a house near the sea.
To give a person or a thing a role: to make someone one's friend or model, or a place one's office.
اِتَّخَذَتْ لَيْلَى الْغُرْفَةَ مَكْتَبًا.
Layla made the room into an office.
In older usage: to make an object out of some material, or to prepare a dish or a remedy.
اِتَّخَذَتِ الْأُمُّ طَعَامًا لِلضُّيُوفِ.
The mother prepared a meal for the guests.
Today it is said of what one settles on after thinking: a decision, a measure, a stance.
اِتَّخَذَ الْمُدِيرُ قَرَارًا سَرِيعًا.
The manager took a quick decision.
What the root means ء خ ذ
The root is about taking, laying hold of. This verb adds the idea of taking for oneself: getting a thing, making something of it, or making it outright.
