Said of someone or something that moves forward and covers a distance: a person, a mount, a ship, a car. It does not say by what means, but stresses the going.
سَارَ الْمُسَافِرُونَ طُولَ النَّهَارِ.
The travellers journeyed all day long.
By image, said of someone who keeps to a line of conduct or a way of doing things, good or bad.
سَارَ الْمُدِيرُ عَلَى خُطَّةٍ وَاضِحَةٍ.
The manager kept to a clear plan.
Said of a saying, a piece of news or a proverb that passes from mouth to mouth and ends up known to all.
سَارَ الْخَبَرُ فِي الْقَرْيَةِ بِسُرْعَةٍ.
The news spread quickly through the village.
What the root means س ي ر
The root is about going along: moving forward, journeying, by day as by night. From it come the words for a march and its distance, for a way of conducting oneself, for sending someone on his way, and for a company of travellers.
